Amy Miller Hill:
Amy is a life long resident of Chesterton Indiana, and a late bloomer to the art world. After working many years in the steel industry, she chose to leave when Bethlehem Steel was sold. Not really knowing what she wanted to be “when she grows up”, her aptitude tests showed that she excelled in art.
Amy always had a talent for art, and a passion for ceramics. Through a government re-training program set up for steelworkers, she entered the Fine Art program at Indiana University Northwest. In the spring of 2005, she graduated with an Associate of Fine Art degree with highest distinction. Continuing her education in art, and continuing to develop her skills, she will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in the spring of 2007.
Amy’s goal from the beginning was to become a ceramics instructor. She teaches both wheel throwing and hand building. Her personal work is both functional ceramic pieces and sculptures. Her greatest joy is when her students blossom into great ceramic artists. The look on their faces when they learn to center the clay on the wheel, and the smiles when the final glazed work comes out of the kiln is a fulfilling for her.
In the spring of 2006, Amy won the coveted first prize in the annual Student Art Exhibit at IUN. Her three ceramic sculptures titled “Menopause: Mood Swings, Night Sweats, and Hot Flashes” are permanently on display at the IUN campus. She also has work on display at the Chesterton Art Gallery.
Amy lives at home with her daughter and husband. Her son is a U.S. Army soldier. She also has a step-son who is a historian for a Washington D.C. museum.
